Uses for Pradaxa

Pradaxa is prescribed to lessen the risk of blood clots and strokes in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, which is the most common kind of abnormal heart rhythm.  The British Medical Journal performed an investigation into Pradaxa and published the results on July 23, 2014.  The study found that serious bleeding events, while on Pradaxa, could be significantly reduced with regular blood plasma level monitoring.  For people on the drug Coumadin or warfarin, regular monitoring of their blood is required.  Yet, Pradaxa is marketed as not requiring regular monitoring of blood levels.

Potential Side Effects

• Bruising caused by unknown injuries;
• Bruises that get larger as time goes;
• Coughing that produces blood or blood clots;

• Excessive nose bleeds;
• Urine that is brown or pink in color;
• Red or black stools – basically, if you go #2 and it looks like tar;
• Blood in vomit – can sometimes look like coffee grounds; and

Update: FDA Announcements

The FDA issued an announcement in November 2012 (as updated from December 2011) that it was evaluating reports of serious bleeding associated with Pradaxa. (The FDA Announcement can be found here)  This FDA evaluation came on the heels of a November 2011 report from the European Medicines Agency that noted 250 cases of serious and fatal bleeding events associated with Pradaxa.

Bleeding events are a known complication of all blood thinners; however, an excess of those events often leads to the FDA investigating the drug manufacturer more in depth.  The FDA released results of a study in May 2014 that indicated Pradaxa put patients at a higher risk for gastrointestinal bleeding.
