    Product Recalls On the Rise

Posted on - Friday, July 22, 2016 under Dangerous Drugs & Products Product Recalls On the Rise

In 2015, over 51 million vehicles were recalled in the U.S.; a new record and more than three times the number of cars actually sold that year.

A recent study found that food annual food recalls have doubled since 2002.

On average, the Consumer Products Safety Commission announces a new recall every single day.

If it seems like you’re hearing or reading about more recalls than you used to, that’s because you are. As discussed in a recent New York Times article, product recalls have become more frequent and involve larger numbers of goods. On the surface, it may seem like the uptick in recalls means that consumer products are getting less safe. But as the Times points out, the increase in recalls is actually a positive thing:

“Some manufacturers will always cut corners or make mistakes, but better detection tools and stricter safety rules mean that problems that once went undetected are now more often spotted and traced back to their source.”

That corner-cutting and mistake-making will always be a problem, as manufacturers look for ways to cut costs and increase profits. But those few extra dollars come at a high price – serious injuries, loss of life, families thrown into chaos because of a defective or dangerous product. When greed trumps safety and consumers are injured, an experienced products liability attorney can hold the wrongdoers responsible and seek compensation and justice for losses caused by the manufacturer or others whose negligence caused those injuries.
