Medical Device and Drug Recalls Soared Over the Summer

Posted on - Monday, October 10, 2016 under Dangerous Drugs & Products Medical Device and Drug Recalls Soared Over the Summer

If you think you’ve been hearing about more and more recalls of prescription drugs and medical devices, that’s because there have in fact been more and more of them. Over the second quarter of 2016, drug recalls rose by 35 percent, while medical device recalls were up 38 percent. This is according to a new Recall Index report recently published by Stericycle.

The new report is in line with trends in other product categories which have also seen a spike in recalls. As reported in the New York Times earlier this year, over 51 million vehicles were recalled in the U.S. in 2015; a new record and more than three times the number of cars actually sold that year. Similarly, a recent study found that food annual food recalls have doubled since 2002.

Other findings of drug and device recall contained in the Stericycle report include:

    • 79 percent of pharmaceutical recalls in the second quarter of 2016 were nationwide recalls.
    • 14 companies experienced more than one pharmaceutical recall in the second quarter of 2016, the highest level in a quarter since the second quarter of 2015.
    • The number of pharmaceutical units recalled in the second quarter of 2016 rose 169 percent compared to the previous quarter.
    • The rate of recalled medical device units was three times higher in the second quarter of 2016 but was still 30 percent below the quarterly average in 2015.
    • Based on medical device recalls in the second quarter of 2016, the top three causes of these recalls were software, mislabeling and quality issues, making up a combined 51 percent of recalls.
    • Nearly 90 percent of medical device recalled units in the second quarter of 2016 were recalled due to quality issues regarding specification and sterility concerns.

If you or a loved one has suffered from the adverse health effects of a drug or medical device, you may be entitled to compensation regardless of whether the drug or device is the subject of a recall. I urge anyone who has questions or concerns involving health problems caused by a drug or device to 1) consult with their physician, and 2) consult with an experienced defective drug and medical device lawyer as soon as possible.
