Drunk Driving is Always Bad, But It’s Even Worse in Georgia

Don’t drink and drive. I don’t need to tell you that. But I will tell you that if you drive under the influence in the state of Georgia, you are doing so in one of the worst possible states in terms of the likely consequences you’ll face.

A new study by WalletHub found that Georgia is one of the harshest states in the country when it comes to DUI.  The study ranked all 50 states based on jail time given, when DUI is charged as a felony, license suspension, minimum fine and mandatory alcohol assessment, among other penalties. It found that Georgia was the second most strict state in the nation in terms of bringing the hammer down on drunk drivers, trailing only Arizona in the study.

According to the rankings, Georgia enacts a minimum of ten days’ jail time for first conviction and minimum of ninety days for a second conviction. Additionally, Georgia is the only state that will suspend your license for an entire year.

Of course, these are just the criminal consequences of drunk driving. The human consequences in terms of injuries and lost lives are even more catastrophic. In 2014, almost 10,000 people were killed in alcohol-related driving incidents, on average one every 53 minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 278 of those deaths were here in Georgia.
