    What is Ethicon Vaginal Mesh?

Transvaginal mesh is also known as pelvic mesh. It is frequently used in surgeries on women to repair pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. These ailments are frequently painful and debilitating.

    • Pelvic Organ Prolapse – Think of a woman’s pelvic floor as a cradle. That cradle is what is holding her bladder, uterus, bowels, etc. in place. After childbirth, the pelvic floor can deteriorate causing those organs to get out of place. This leads to chronic pain.
    • Stress Urinary Incontinence – The easy way to put this disorder is a woman urinates on herself when doing a forceful activity such as coughing or sneezing. It is an embarrassing way to live life so many women seek surgical intervention to fix the problem.

Transvaginal mesh is a synthetic material that surgeons use to repair a woman’s pelvic floor. It is estimated that over half a million people have undergone a surgery where pelvic mesh was used. It is critical that you contact the doctor that performed the surgery to determine what products were used in your corrective surgery.

Ethicon Vaginal Mesh & Bladder Sling Defects

Ethicon, Inc. is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson that focuses on women’s health products. In 2005, Ethicon introduced to the market its Gynecare ProLift line of pelvic mesh products. Johnson & Johnson used a little used FDA protocol known as 510(k) to rush approval of the products for consumer use. That process does not require safety studies like the standard process of approval. Johnson & Johnson represented to the FDA that the Ethicon Gynecare ProLift was substantially similar to existing products on the market.

In 2008, the Food & Drug Administration issued a warning about vaginal mesh products and their potential dangers. In 2011, the FDA received over 1,000 reports of complications from the use of vaginal mesh products such as those made by Ethicon. The FDA ordered transvaginal mesh manufacturers, such as Ethicon, to conduct additional testing on their devices.

Following some additional testing by Johnson & Johnson, Ethicon pulled four of its vaginal mesh products from the market in 2012. The products pulled from market were the devices listed above.

Side Effects of Defective Johnson & Johnson Vaginal Mesh

    • Erosion of Mesh into Vaginal Wall
    • Infections
    • Chronic Pain Often Affecting Sexual Intercourse
    • Vaginal Bleeding
    • Scarring
    • Nerve Damage
    • Disfigurement of Vagina
    • Perforation of Organs
    • Return of Pelvic Organ Prolapse or Stress Urinary Incontinence

All of these complications usually require additional surgery to repair the damage caused. Sometimes, the complications cannot be undone, and long term damage is caused that decreases a woman’s quality of life.
